About Laguna Beach Surfboards
Laguna Beach Surfboards (LBS), owned and operated by Jason Rate, got it’s start painting old surfboards retired from the water. The used and worn surfboards were given new life as vibrant epoxy art pieces. LBS expanded, creating table/bar tops along with wall mounted bottle openers, coat hooks, and guitar mounts creating functional art pieces.
Spring of 2017, LBS became a promotional products supplier and a member of SAAC, SAGE, and PPAI. LBS now creates unique awards and plaques, custom made to just about any shape you can imagine. The awards and plaques can be hung on a wall or displayed on a desk using acrylic stands designed by LBS.
About the process
A two-part epoxy is purchased from a local concrete flooring supplier. This particular epoxy is meant to be used for garage and restaurant flooring. Colored metallic powder is mixed with the clear epoxy creating amazing vibrant colors.
Half inch Baltic Birch (marine grade plywood) is painted with several layers of epoxy. The large painted sheets are then cut with a flatbed laser into custom shapes and sizes. The laser actually burns the wood as it cuts, creating a beautiful black edge. At this point, a logo can be applied using full color adhesive vinyl, full color UV printing, or through a screen printing process. Each item is then coated with another layer of clear epoxy to seal in the logos.
There are 20 different colors of epoxy to choose from and an infinite number of shapes.
